Vista can connect to home network but not internet

Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback. I have an old Vista Gateway laptop 9 years old that hasn't been able to connect to the internet since October I didn't give it much thought since I knew Microsoft was killing support in a few months. So last week before I moved iTunes to my new Dell Inspiron laptop I tried going online one last time to update everything but still nothing; even now as I write this, nothing.

So, does anyone know what happened back in October some update perhaps that may have caused this problem? I'm willing to give this Registry edit a try but I would rather use a confirmed process rather than some off-the-cuff attempt that works for some but not for others. What I don't need is someone pretending to be a Microsoft Engineer or someone with no know-how giving help that isn't the solution but more of the problem.

I apologize for the snarky comment but I've grown very tired of being led around on wild goose chases on these forums by people who don't have a clue to what's going on but continuously pat themselves on their backs with their impressive Microsoft credentials and useless help from the comfort of their parent's basement. Jesse and Roxy. Hey everyone, I need help fixing a Windows machine. I use Apples, l I really know nothing about troublshooting Windows, I know how to use it just fine, but thats it.

In all honesty, I don't even know if this is a Vista problem, or a hardware problem. My girlfriend has a 2 year old HP laptop with Vista. She just got Comcast internet.

They both worked fine for 2 days. Then 2 nights ago, her machine just shut off for no reason, she booted it back up, and now no internet. My Mac works fine, so I know its not the Airport. I unplugged the Airport, reset the modem, and the HP, plugged it in directly, still no internet. I plugged the MacBook in directly, works fine. So I isolated it to the HP laptop. The wierd thing is her computer shows full signal, excellent connection, when connected to the Airport, or directly -- it just doesn't work.

So, tell me what to look at or check for. On the Network Connections window, right-click on your current network adapter or Wi-Fi and choose Properties. You should connect automatically and if not, try restarting your PC to start using automatic IP Address setting. Sometimes a corrupted network driver can lead to bad internet. Expand Network adapters and find your Wireless Network Adapter. You will see two options now. You can update the driver manually or automatically online.

Try connecting your PC to the router using an Ethernet cable. If there is no problem with the router or internet connection, you should connect flawlessly. This option can solve all types of router-related problems. You can reset the router to factory settings to force reset all the new changes that may be causing the issue.

This also means you will have to again password protect your router and change basic settings according to your needs. Although you can reset the router from its settings, an easier way is to press the physical reset button on the router itself. The reset button is usually hidden inside a tiny hole, so you will have to check the router carefully to find the button.

Once found, use a paper clip or mobile SIM tray opener to press the button inside and hold it for seconds, or until all the lights blink and the router restarts. You should be able to connect to the internet when the router restarts.

This is why resetting your network should be your last resort. A new window will open warning you about what will happen when your network is reset.

Ultimately, it is the job of your Internet Service Provider to ensure you are connected to the internet all the time, especially if they have provided the router and modem. If none of the above tips worked, call your ISP and tell them the exact problem. They should be able to provide on-call instructions to fix the problem. If they are unable to fix the problem on call, you can ask them to send an agent to physically inspect the device.

There is no single answer to the Wi-Fi connected but no internet access problem. The above tips should be able to fix most of the software related problems. However, if there is a hardware problem — like a damaged network card or router — then you will have to contact a technician.

If he is not writing about technology, you will find him spending quality time with his little family. You must be logged in to post a comment. You may also like. However, you find that the Windows Vista machine is connected to the Internet successfully.

If there is anything I have misunderstood, please let me know. Before we go further, I would like to collect the following information with you for further research:. What error message was received in the IE window when attempting to access webpage? Meanwhile, please refer to the following steps for troubleshooting:. Microsoft Online Community Support. I hope there is a fix for this or at least remove the update that is causing this problem.

I don't have time to do update them one by one and restart the computer just to see which one. I had the same problem yesterday.

There was a network shown between my computer and the internet icon, and there was a red X, between the network and the Internet. Anyway i got ip from my router, and other coumputers also could use the internet throug the same router.

Maybe it will help. Same problem on my Vista Home Premium portable. It happened gradually, one browser after the other. I could still connect through Opera when IE and Firefox would give a "connexion refused" message. Now all of them give the same message. The notebook maker's support line suggested would you have guessed it? NOT something that I want to do. I recently had this happen to me out of nowhere, meaning no new app installs or anything to narrow down as the culprit.

I will be using the computer such as watching a dvd and downloading headers from newsgroups but IE or Firefox can't connect. I am clearly connected to the internet and Network Diag.

It happens only occasionally and usually is rectified by a restart. I have found that it is more than likely a corrupt winsock protocol, although have not figured out what is causing the corruption. Anyways, try this link or google winsock protocol reset and hope that helps. I'm also having Internet connectivity problems with Windows Mail and Internet Explorer, which mysteriously started last week.

The Internet connection icon shows that I am connected to my wireless router. The problem seems to have started following a Windows Update last week, which made my IE unable to connect. Windows Mail could still connect. A day later I got the Windows Update message that Vista SP1 was available, so I assumed that it had been quicky issued to resolve the connectivity problem. I backed up everything, and finally today decided to install SP1. It didn't resolve my connectivity issue, and now Windows Mail also has connectivity issues.
