How to show file extension on vista
Please try this yourself: rename a DLL to a different extension such as. Watch the Version tab disappear under the file's Properties. If you switch the extension back, suddenly Vista recognizes the version specification. Why is Vista ignoring file versions for custom file extensions?? We deal extensively with clients using older version of our files, so we need to be able to easily see the versions. However, since upgrading from XP to Vista, the file version accessed by going to the file's Properties and selecting the Version tab is no longer shown.
There isn't even a version tab anymore! If you try adding a "File Version" column in Details view, it also doesn't show up. The only way to get the file version to show up is to change the file's extension to DLL. Then suddenly the version tab appears, and the DLL also shows its version in Details view.

I was able to open all the music ones. I tried all the different views for the file types as in list, details, icons etc. Oh, thumbnails just gave me a blank paper, nothing for icons.
Do I need to download all these file extension programs that it says because my computer won't open them. It says use the web or pick from what I have. I have over 20, files saved so I can't do this with every file. Did I do the backup wrong? These are files that have been backed up and changed to a number. I all ready have the file extensions showing on my pc. That's not the problem. It's the files that I backed up that were changed to a long list of numbers.
Is there a program that will change them to their file extensions they are suppose to be? By the way fix-it center tells me what settings etc are wrong on my pc and when I check them they have the right settings. I asked this question in and still have not received an answer. Here you can browse by file and for music for example you see the MP3 files shown as MP3 and so on. File extensions help the operating system identify the correct program to open for that particular file.
Being able to see these extensions will help you better manage the files. Support: support sawtoothsoftware. Consulting: analytics sawtoothsoftware. Sales: sales sawtoothsoftware.
